The Iowa Real Estate Appraiser Board consists of seven members. The purpose of the Iowa Real Estate Appraiser Board is to examine candidates, issue certificates, and investigate violations of the law and rules. Also, the Board acts to revoke or suspend licenses of individuals found to be in violation of Iowa law or administrative rules. Respective code and rules may be found under Iowa Code Chapter 543D Real Estate Appraisals and Appraisers and 17A Iowa Administrative Procedure Act. The Board adopts rules establishing standards necessary to administer and enforce the Iowa Code Chapter 543D.

Iowa real estate appraiser are expected to demonstrate working knowledge of current appraisal theories, practices, and techniques which act to serve and protect members of the general public. The Iowa Board establishes examination specifications for each category of real estate appraiser.

Each respective Iowa Real Estate Appraiser Board member serves for a term of three years appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate.

  • Five members are real estate appraisers
  • Two members who represents the general public.

It is unlawful for an individual to act as an Iowa real estate appraiser. An individual who violates respective Iowa real estate appraiser law may be guilty of a misdemeanor and/or felony.

The State of Iowa has 99 counties.

There are currently three classifications of Iowa Real Estate Appraisers.

  1. Trainee Associate Real Estate Appraiser
  2. Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser
  3. Certified General Real Estate Appraiser

Please read the following for an overview of each.

1. Real Estate Trainee Associate Appraiser

  • Minimum of 75 classroom hours of specific course content.
  • 15 hours in respect to the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).
  • May only appraise properties under the scope of work of supervising appraiser.

2. Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser

  • May perform an appraisal on any four unit or less property.
  • May perform appraisal for federally financed purposes for residential properties without regard to value.
  • Minimum of 200 classroom hours of qualifying education.
  • 15 hours in respect to the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).
  • Gain at least 2,500 hours of real property appraisal experience over a 24 month period.
  • Must have an Associate's degree or equivalent from an accredited institution or 21 semester hours in respective classes.
  • Must pass the Iowa certified residential real estate appraiser examination.

3. Certified General Real Estate Appraiser

  • May perform appraisals for all real estate for any purpose.
  • Minimum of 300 classroom hours of specific course content.
  • 15 hours in respect to the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).
  • Gain at least 3,000 hours of real property appraisal experience over a 30 month period.
  • Must have a Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution or 30 semester hours in respective courses.
  • Must pass the Iowa certified general real estate appraiser examination.

All appraisal work must be in compliance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).

Iowa appraiser continuing education is required to ensure that the appraiser maintains and increases appraiser skill and knowledge. The Iowa Real Estate Appraiser must complete a certain amount of hours during each renewal period to meet the Continuing Education requirement.
