New York Real Estate Appraisers require certain licensing or certification requirements in order to perform real estate appraisals. For example, education and experience is required for all applicants and is based on the category of licensure or certification. Also, a written examination is required. All applicants must submit experience and educational requirements to the New York Board of Real Estate Appraisal. Please read for an example of courses taken for certification.

New York Real Estate appraiser rules and regulations act to protect the general public from unethical and unprofessional conduct by New York real estate appraisers. New York real estate appraisers must have the ability to serve the general public in a fair and honest manner. In addition, all New York real estate appraisers are required to follow the standards of practice contained in the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraiser Practice (USPAP).
It is not legal to appraise real estate without a New York license or certification issued by the New York real estate appraiser Board. All appraiser complaints filed by general public are investigated.
The New York Real Estate Appraiser Board consists of nine members. The New York Real Estate Appraiser Board is located in Albany, NY.

All New York Real Estate appraisers must be of good moral character. Also, respective applicants must have at least a high school diploma or its equivalent. There are four levels of New York Real Estate Appraisers.
- Licensed Real Estate Appraiser Assistant
- Licensed Residential Real Estate Appraiser
- Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser
- Certified General Real Estate Appraiser
1. Apprentice Real Estate Appraiser
- Must have at least 150 hours of qualifying education.
- Required to work under the supervision of a New York licensed or certified Real Estate Appraiser.
2. Licensed Residential Real Estate Appraiser
- Appraise non complex 1 to 4 residential real estate with a transaction value less than $1,000,000.
- Must have at least 150 hours of qualifying education.
- Must have at least 2,000 hours of experience working as a real estate appraiser at least 24 months.
- Pass the New York real estate appraiser examination.
3. Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser
- Appraise all one to four residential real estate without regard to value or complexity.
- Must have at least 200 hours of qualifying education.
- Must have at least 2,500 hours of experience working as a real estate appraiser at least 24 months.
- Have at least an Associate Degree from or 21 semester hours from an accredited institution.
- Pass the New York real estate appraiser examination.
4. Certified General Real Estate Appraiser
- Appraise all types of real estate.
- Must have at least 300 hours of qualifying education.
- Must have at least 3,000 hours of experience working as a real estate appraiser at least 30 months.
- Experience must contain non residential real estate work.
- Have at least an Bachelor's Degree from or 30 semester hours from an accredited institution.
- Pass the New York real estate appraiser examination.
The qualifications for the New York Real Estate Appraiser are set by the Appraiser Qualifications Board of The Appraisal Foundation.
Also, the New York Real Estate Appraiser Board is in compliance with Title XI of the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act of 1989.
